2006-2007 Moose Harvest

Algonquin
Nation Draw

It's that time of year to start making plans for this year’s harvest.  The ANR's have been working with the MNR towards a Hunting Management Plan.  The Management Plan will be a joint plan between the 10 Algonquin communities (Pikwàkanagàn, Greater Golden Lake, Bancroft, Antoine, Whitney, Mattawa-North Bay, Bonnechere, Ardoch, Ottawa , Sharbot Lake) and the MNR; and will be a two year agreement, with a review before next year’s harvest commences.  This Plan should be finalized within the next few weeks.

This year there will be a draw system for both inside and outside the Park similar to past years, but it will have a new format.  The main reasons for the changes, is that this year’s surveys showed a reduction in the moose herd, which has reduced the number of tags available this year, to maintain a healthy herd.

Here are some of the changes:

A -

Inside the Park:

6 names to an adult tag and 1 to a calf.

B -

Outside the Park:

6 names to an adult tag and 1 to a calf, but calves will be limited in
WMU's 48, 55A, 55B, and 57 to help increase the herd.

C -

Outside the Park:

there will be an introduction of a special Bow Hunt in some of the
WMU's and it will require 2 names to an adult tag and 1 to a calf tag.
This special Bow Hunt will have different season for
different WMU's.

The following is a list of the dates for Bow:

In WMU 41 the season begins on September 15, 2006 & closes on October 6, 2006.
Remember that the boundary for WMU 41 starts at the western most point of Trout Lake using Trout Lake Road heading North which becomes Highway 63.The Boundary is then HWY 63 through to the Ontario/Quebec border bridge over the Ottawa River .

 In WMU 48, 55A, 55B, 57, the season begins on September 15, 2006 and closes October 9, 2006,

In WMU 58, 61, 62, 63A&B, 64A&B, & 65 the season begins on September 15, 2006 and stops October 9, 2006,

In WMU 58, 61, 62, 63A&B, 64A&B, & 65 the season reopens on November 20, 2006 and ends on January 15, 2007
(with the exception that the season for all cow moose will close on December 21, 2006)

There are no Bow Tags in Algonquin Park.

Note: If you decide to apply for a bow tag you will not be able to apply for a rifle tag.
However, you will still be able to "party" hunt with those
that have tags from the rifle hunt - or visa-versa.
